why do people love trash TV?

I am wondering, with all these trash TV talkshows and reality shows, why are they so successful? Why do they stay around for so long? Is it going to get worse with the "You Tube/ My Space generation" being used to putting it all out there or do you think with recent debates (Don Imus) sensibility will take hold?
Jerry Springer has been on for what? Forever??
I've watched a Dr. Phil show last week and he is getting kind of grimy too (abusive fathers, out of control family dynamics etc.) oh and then we have the load of people making complete fools of themselves (celebrity fit club, Flavor of love and all it's offsprings etc.)

Why aren't people getting sick of it?

Someone once said that all these shows are so appealing because they make the average person feel normal. Is that it?
Or is it the rubberneck effect, you know how you can't stop looking at that car accident?

 

Bcoz we are a depressed race with a lot of taboos, a lot of repressive religions, a lot of forbidden fruits! so we try and find the ways we can to quench our thirst for free expression of our inner pulsions, morbid curiosity, trash, violence and crazy drama...one of these ways is of course watching these horrible TV shows!!!

 

Yes,folks like Jerry Springer,Fox networks,and other spew the underbelly of society.

 

Agreed... I guess what also surprises me more than the fact that people obviously watch it by the millions are the people who actually go on the show for their 15 minutes of fame.

I think the real question is what is wrong with trash TV or trash in general?

Let’s look at:
Do we always eat at 5 star restaurants or do we like to suck down some greasy hamburgers or a bag of fat chips from time to time? Be honest.

Do we always read War and Peace… Macbeth… or Les Miserables?
Or do we read about Batboy… Paris Hilton… and How UFO’s took over the government?

Look at some of our subjects here:
We talk about real life deep, deep issues and we talk about “Flat Azzes”….
Sometimes you need to keep it lite, trashy, funny, silly, whatever.

There are some great non-trashy shows on TV and a few of them are “reality” shows but we do need some balance [or maybe I should say, variety] in what we do.

I mean if anyone knows about balance and variety, it should be us.
No?

Trash ain’t all bad when you don’t take it too seriously and when you know sugar from shyt.

 

I know that the real world can be a little sleezy/trashy sometimes, but there's just something about it that keeps me tuned in and wanting to see every episode. It's actually one of the few television programs that i actually make the time to see. I guess i like all the drama or something..lol
