Respectfully Dude, I don't see how the point is being missed. Male/Female has NOTHING to do with "deciding" what is morally correct. Murder is wrong - period! Gender is NOT a deciding factor in whether cold blooded, premeditated first degree abortion is an acceptable practice. Again, I pose the question; "Does someone else have the so-called "right" to chop, mince, hack, slice & dice YOU to death, because in their vaunted opinion it is inconvenient to allow YOU to live"? Again...respectfully...anyone who commits or facilitates the commission of a premeditated first degree abortion is commiting murder. Don't think so, go your local Law Library. Find a copy of "Steven Black's Law Dictionary", and look up the term murder. Please...don't take my word for it. Look it up for yourself. It's right there in black and white (no pun intended). And, finally, while we clearly disagree (without being disagreeable) on the subject of abortion, I respect your RIGHT to your opinion. I just disagree with it. I'm not going to change your mind, and you aren't going to change mine. 8)
Sex has everything to do with abortions because I dont think a man can relate to the emotional, physical, and psychological tramua that a woman's body goes through when she is pregnant. Its easy to tell a woman she cant have an abortion when your a man.
wow, judging from the responses here it seems like more people are anti abortion that I thought. Yes, I have seen the videos of abortions. Of course its brutal, thats what you have to do to kill something. Let me back up and say this, I dont know you from the next name on the screen, I was trying to point out a few things about your argument that did not sit well with me. I do think that overpopulation is the root of many of our problems. I am educated and I have given the topic much thought. I would much rather not go into a rant because I would probably bore the board to death. if you would like to continue with the rant I am willing to take this into Email land. Can you at least answer my question? Do you think we would still be worried about peak oil production or lack of potable water and natural resources if we had 4 billion people? 3 billion? Would be as a worried about our growing piles of post consumer waste? I may be a nihilist but I for one do not want to bring a child into this horrible ugly world. Call me totally crazy but I think many aspects of child birth are extremely self driven/selfish. I think there is MORE benefit in planting a few trees that can give back to the world in a creative way than a human being that will only glean, and take from the world.
also...I have a feeling you will say "but you are here, arent YOU taking and gleaning from the earth and NOT giving back?" And I say, yes, exactly, I know this and I deal with this everyday. That is one aspect of the modern* human condition. *or is it postmodern because I'm aware of it? lol.
Ok, and again, I respect your right to your opinion, but I have to reiterate; "Does someone else have some alleged "right" to Chop, Mince, Hack, Slice & Dice YOU to death, because in their vaunted opinion THEY have pompously decided that it's inconvenient for them to allow YOU to live"? I think we're both going to hold fast to our respective positions, and that's fine! The good news is we've managed to do so without resorting to viscerating recriminations. It is nice to engage in intelligent discourse with someone of differing viewpoints, without resorting to the politically correct asinity of trying to out "flame" each other. LOL 8)
Everyone vehemently thinks what they're going to think about abortion. I think this topic should be stopped, lest we go round and round in circles, recycling the same stuff. It's a heated argument, and I agree with Darryl1954 - no one is going to change anyone's mind about that topic. YOu're going to think what you're going to think. So, let's get back to talking about something constructive, shall we? I do like the idea of planting more trees. I'm all about recycling and preserving the only place we have to thrive: Earth. Let's all stop sitting in front of our computers and start making a difference, big or small, on the liberal side or conservative side. We can make a difference. Even a small difference is worth its weight in gold.
Jellybird, thanks for bringing up this topic. Brings some reality to the forum. I was new here and very quickly noticed a dumbing down by generalised evaluative comments about women (by both men and women) as well as feeling there's a degree of objectification going on that I wasn't comfortable with. It sometimes seemed guys here were lusting over a stereotypical white female image which I have rejected long ago - in contrast to the men in my direct environment who more readily respect & understand who I am... sadly. Back to the topic, I was shocked to see that your comment was met with so much resistance. I don't live in the US, but from what I know I do find it hard to understand why working class people would vote the Republicans, especially if they're black. Their agenda is clear. What happened with hurricane Katrina says everything. To take it further though I don't think supporting a Democrat president is the answer, even if he's black. It's not just that Barack seems to me too much of a Tom. (And the New Orleans mayor is black as well isn't he?) The Democrats have also been involved in wars in the Middle East, and they don't even pretend to support the interests of working class people. Or was there no racial oppresion in the Clinton years? They are backed by coporate lobbies too, as is the case for most large political parties in the world. This is so obvious it's no wonder so few people vote. I'm one of them. I believe politics has little to do with voting right now, and everything to do with fighting for whatever social services we can keep (which are being cut all over the world right now) and helping each other in our communities Re: the topics of overpopulation and abortion, it is abhorrent to think that anyone would connect the two in the first place. Have you heard of Malthus? The 19th c English intellectual who argued that the working class population was too big and there weren't enough resources to keep them alive, therefore they should be left to die out in the slums, or even better, kicked out of the cities? That's what public policies around the world have returned to today, 2 centuries later. I can't believe people buy such BS, when at the top end CEO salaries are so high and when state bureucracies waste money like water, on weapons, policing, and even on exorbitant 'public art' and monuments. What's ethical about entrusting human life management to state thugs? Enforcing abortion is almost as bad as banning it. I agree that women should be free to control their own bodies, and a fetus IS part of my body. How is my freedom to control my body more murderous than state-sanctioned murder in wars around the world, and by internal police forces? Sorry for the rant, but silence would have implied agreement...
...and while you're sweating planting those trees, Shell is planting biofuel crops... ...while you're turning off your hallway lights, the business district keeps all its office lights on 24-7 'for effect'... ...while you're cycling to work, corporations gamble on the carbon emissions finance market... are you being duped?
Rosa in your country the Tories are like the Republicans in the US. They did nothing for Blacks especially when people like Enoch Powell,Maggie Thatcher and others. For example the race riots of the 80's and their support for the Apartheid government of South Africa. Thatcher thinks its in "cloud cuckooland" if Mandela rules the country. Anyway, it is doubtful if a Black person becomes a Tory MP.
It's not 'my' country, I'm not even from here, but even if I was, the tories are as bad as you say and worse. not that labour have proven to be much better. Why would a black person want to join the tories though. That would be sad.
Jelly, she said she is not from the UK. Rosa could be living in the commonwealth nations, former colonies of the UK.
Sorry, not here v frequently, but to clear up the confusion, I'm from Greece, came to the UK in my late teens, live in London now... Never tasted the sweet potato pie... I miss those thick pastries tho! But in any case I wouldn't defend any nation state's policy just because I was born there. Greece only started to receive an immigrant population from Africa & South/East Asia within the past few years, and the treatment they're getting from police & authorities is nothing to be proud of.
Yes it is sad. I read Italy don't play when it comes to third world people coming to their shores. I saw on Deutsche Welle's European Journal. One of the reports are of Greek Immigration police searching on ships to find migrants.
Off-topic but... Well, I find it awful really, but it's an interesting awfulness. And some great people here from all kinds of places. Need to travel more though. By the way I'm planning a trip to NY next month. Any suggestions for places to go / things to do there? That's the least they do. Greek police recently has been known to collaborate with & protect far-right racist organisations, the kind who assaulted Pakistanis in their homes with iron clubs last December. In January port police razed down a part of an Afghan slum settement near the port of Patras whose residents they habitually abuse (they even stabbed someone the other day). They intimidate immigrant street vendors constantly to the extent that a Nigerian CD seller jumped off a window to his death last summer... And that's only the stuff I happen to have heard about.
Wow. That pretty broad. It depends on the types of things you like to do and whether you want to see the tourist crap...I mean stuff (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc.) or want to go off the beaten path (The Apollo on Amateur Night, The Beacon Theather, shopping in the East Village...).
No tourist crap, thanks! I guess I'm mostly interested in finding out what it's like to live there (which i'm unlikely to achieve in 2 weeks of course but it's a start), taking walks in interesting areas in that respect, seeing a bit of the everyday culture and a bit of the ugly side as well.
If you want to see the real New York, then in my humble opinion, these spots will give you a true feel of NYC... -125th Street (Harlem) on the west end where you would see the Apollo. East 125th is cool, but is kinda "cleaned up" with Starbucks, Magic Johnson Theather, etc. but is still worth seeing. -Port Authority (40th St. & 8th Ave): Commuters from all over northeast United States come thru this HUGE bus terminal. Not to mention 6 city blocks of porn, strip clubs, and enough debauchery for America's largest city. -Church Ave. (Brooklyn): About as real as real gets in NYC. You also get to see the south end of Prospect Park if you hit Caton Ave. **This is a day-time trip. As safe as any street in NewYork during the day, but be on your way well before dark. -Canal St. (ChinaTown): You can buy anything and everything in the world there. -Broadway between 8th St. and Houston (pronounced "house-ton"): You get to see New York Univ. and Washington Square Park/Greenwich Village. Great places to shop for everything from clothes to art. This is my short list. I would still go to the Beacon, Times Square, and if I had time, catch the PATH train to New Jersey and go to downtown Newark (Market St/Broad St. area).
Rosa,me and the rest of members would be glad to help you on your NYC holiday plans. As you know the pound is more stronger than the dollar:$1=.40. Write a list on what to buy and check on the web on getting your things through customs. I read that the government taxes the items from foreign lands.
