The thread title is self-explanatory. Although I think different ethnic groups vary considerably, I would argue that in my experience African-American males (and BM in general) tend to be far more well groomed than white men. I knew a brotha who spent almost two hours a day fixing his braids up properly - styling, fastening and conditioning. Alright now I have a particular interest in braids since it is part of a mathematical theory (braid theory), so maybe I'm over-exaggerating it's importance here. But the delicate weaving and waving project that my buddy went through everyday for me typifies what I see as better general grooming amongst other BM. I think that when you spend an inordinate amount of time on one type of grooming (for e.g. braiding), you will tend to spend lots more on other types (like working out, keeping fit and in-shape, flossing etc.). Maybe it's just me, but I think BM do this wayyyyyyyyyyy better than WM - and I hope it goes without saying I mean that as no disrespect to WM; I just think we do it better and more often. I have no statistics to back up my claim (obviously on this type of thing it's very difficult to compile actual numbers based on reliable sources). It's just a generalization from what I see on the street(s). And I know not all BM have braids or caps or whatever. But I think it IS true we have far more eccentric and exotic stylings than other ethnic groups - and I'm thinking maybe this carries over into general grooming too. What do you think? -- Please note: the term "groomed" isn't meant to infer that black men are much more "cleaner" or that white men are "dirty". I mean it more as a relative amount of time spent on taking care of yourself. Obviously most ordinary people have a basic level of hygiene. What I'm really thinking of is that extra amount of time spent styling... or getting things just right/perfect... which I believe BM do more often. --
I don't know, but... I like a man who takes a shower, brushes his teeth and combs his hair in the morning, puts on clean pressed clothes and goes to work. Anything more than that is a little fruity to me. Nobody asked me, but you know what type of man I like :?: Somebody suited for a white Navy uniform, with a regal presence! Earrings? Thingies? Puleeze. So beneath my kind of man. Regal simplicity! Ahh... Maybe a bit, just a tad touch, of hair gel to keep the hair in place. No more. Fitness is imperative, but it's not so much grooming - it's essential taking care of yourself. All these "extra" unnatural muscles look just as fruity to me.
Hmmm interesting question... I honestly don't think so though. I think on average guys probably spend the same amount of time covering the basics. Of course a high maintenance hairstyle, such as braids, would take more time but other than that... I would say no.
COMB!&GEL! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Unless you like BM with afros or perms in they hair you aint talking about no BROTHA! We mostly use a okay all the black guys say it with me..... A BRUSH!!
Well, yeah... I wasn't talking about a brotha. For a brotha: a brush and some pomade... right?
That's odd. I've seen just as many dirty black men as white men in my day, (homeless or not) however, in a formal social setting, this may be true most of the time (it seems to be true in that sense of the matter) but what if the guy's sexual preference has something to do with it? A LOT of gay white guys are very, very neat and well-groomed.
Perhaps this thread should be here A stereotypes IS a stereotype even if its a favourable one. Lets be fair.
Myself - I have my days... When I'm at work in the office, I'm clean. Most other times as well. There have been times when I got some idea in the middle of the night and loaded up my camera and ran off to get some good video or still shots. Short of brushing my teeth, I'm sure I was dirty.
well if you want to count a person who does the braids/weaves as spending more time on care.. welll then by the same token you can say BW take more care. Lets face it, black hair, when weaved or braided takes HOURS to do.... so its not really fair in my opinion to say BM take more time, because our hair is different, so it has different needs.
I saw Four Brothers today (awsome movie, real gritty), and I recall someone in the movie or was in in the DVD specials said something about Detrot being uniquely image conscious in that its the only city where (BM) would go rent a pair crocodile skin shoes to match an outfit. Is this true? I'll make like Moziah, and conclude with images (albeit old ones) illustrating the theme of my post. Dandy: man who is excessively concerned about his clothes and appearce. Examples:
See the only reason I would disagree with that is coz I have never heard it MENTIONED BEFORE AS A STEREOTYPE. I never seen the idea that BM are generally more well-groomed being promoted - if anything it's quite the opposite. We tend to be shown as ghetto-fabulous dirty with ashtray breath and bronze caps. So I would say its an idea, but not a prevelant stereotype; if you see what I mean. -- FOR e.g. a popular stereotype of BM is "ALL black males have big dicks" --
Hmmmm... this is an interesting topic. I that QSassy has a very good point. It's true that anyone with a complicated hairstyle (braids, weave or even a mohawk!) will take more time to primp than someone with a simple hairstyle - black or not. On top of having a preference for black men, I also tend to have a SERIOUS prefrence for very well-groomed men. I'm a BIG fan of the metrosexual look and lifestyle, so I tend to notice, date and be more attracted to men who are extremely well-groomed. I like a man who has a sense of style and takes pride in his apprearance. However, I would not say that black men are more well-groomed than white men. I think that there are bm who are well-groomed and there are wm who are well-groomed. But one thing is certain... I will definitely be noticing the well-groomed BM, MUCH MORE! Me looooves the dandy look. Here's my fave "dandy": Mmmmmmmmmm
