Ugh ... I feel some kinda way because I didn't go to my usual black-owned barber shop to get my hair cut. I just didn't have the time, though. I can get there in 25 mins by bus. But, coming home can be up to an hour and a half. Plus, the usual hour to hour and a half wait for my barbor, then 45 mins to do the cut. Just couldn't swing it today. So, I ducked in to the local barber college. Got my wig, beard and mustache sliced up by some little Latino kid. He hooked it up, I have to say. Was in and out in about 40 mins. Back home in 30. Got back to work without missing a beat. All for $10. I usually pay about triple that plus tip. Still feel bad 'cause I'm the one always screaming about supporting black business. Especially, when they do good work at reasonable price. Now, I'm just another hipocrit. ...lol
That's not hypocrisy, that's the free market, brotha. Free yourself from the bullshit mindset you have to go out of your way & pay triple just because people look like you. Latinos do twice the work at 1/2 the price that's why they're winning
I see what you're saying. But, it's not like my regular barber is overcharging. $30 + a $5 tip is a fair price for hair, mustache and beard. Dude consistantly does great work. And, when I go in to get cut, my shit be looking unruly af. Today it was a time issue. I had a couple of hours I could take to get a cut today or it wasn't going to happen till next week. And the way I was looking, combined with my wheelchair, by next week I'd be looking like I was homeless. ..lol So, I decided to try the barber college. That's why it was so cheap ($10). I let a student practice on my head. If he was an actual barber, I'm sure the Latino kid would charge as much or more than my regular barber. As far as spending money with black businesses, I try to make it a priority. If they do good work and the price is fair, I don't mind going a little bit out of my way. Jews and Asians have done it for years. That's how they began wining. And Latinos do so much work so cheaply because a lot of their work force is undocumented. It's easy to under charge black businesses doing the same kinds of work when you don't have to pay your workers the same as black business owners do. That's not free market, that's cheating. And it especially hurts my people who are trying to make an honest go of it. As racist as this sounds, that's why I don't use Latino labor if it's too cheap because I know why they can charge so little for so much. Black people deserve breaks, too. I'm not about to fuck my own to save a couple bucks here and there. I'll end up back at my regular barber. But, if I'm pressed for time and need to squeeze a quick cut in, it's nice to have the barber college in back pocket for emergencies.
The US along with GB as gone so far to the right that every turn to left is looked upon as socialistic. Too bad, really.
Wait What? You do realize supporting your own is how every other group wins. Economic power equals social power. But go on being an individual hope that works for you Mr. Carson
Wow Bliss! You have gone above and beyond the call of duty as a good and decent citizen. He is so blessed you found his wallet! I think you should either mail him his wallet or drop it off at the police station. I don't know how that works dropping an id in the mail...
Until it doesn't. No matter how successful I personally become I know it's not all about me. That kind of thinking destroys economies and more importantly swaths of people
Indeed. When all we worship is profit everyone suffers. People pretend if money is a shield when in most cases it's a damn noose if not used properly.
My neighbor came knocking on my door after 11 pm last night asking to use my phone; her husband had beaten her up. When I got home last night around 10:30, I saw him marching across his yard and stomping down the street, but didn't think much of it because I'd seen that from him before. I was a little surprised that it was my door she came to, but I let her use my phone to call 911 and let her cry on my porch for a few while she waited for the police. I feel for her and her little girl, but it was so awkward since I really don't know them. I'm nice when my neighbors say hello or whatever, but I pretty much avoid them otherwise. The dude has a temper, and so does his brother who happens to live on the other side...evidently I'm surrounded by families with domestic violence issues, and it sucks. The other brother was arrested several weeks ago, so it's been pretty quiet on that side since then. I typically don't hear as much from the other house (she even asked me last night if I could hear anything from their house), unless something happens outside and then it'd be about his brother's wife calling the cops on his brother. The guy got into it a few months ago with the cops in front of my house when they'd arrested his brother for an incident, but I'm not aware of the police being called on him until last night. Of course, I'm a private person so I pay as much attention to their business as I would want them to pay to mine. I don't know if he went to jail or not since he wasn't there when the police came, but I hope the woman and her daughter can find a safe escape from the situation. I kinda feel like a jerk for feeling this way, but I hope her coming to my door doesn't become a habit & doesn't lead to issues for me & mine with her psycho husband. I hope he doesn't make an issue out of it if he finds out I let her use my phone, but if so, he better not fuck with me. I don't want it to go there. This shit makes me miss living in the country where there are no neighbors for miles.
Today has proven to be a tough day for me to get through and I think the hardest part is still left to deal with being a parent of a grown child is so hard sometimes especially when you cannot help them. Heartbroken and sad
Cherok33.....sorry you are going through this. It can be difficult for sure. It seems like there is something in the air. I've been dealing with things with one of mine for the past few weeks. It's due to a reaction to medication...amazing how much devastation something can cause so quickly. My youngest ended up in the hospital a few days ago (on her birthday). Tam - I feel for you. You want to be compassionate and helpful but no one wants to be dealing with the fallout of neighbor's issues. I've been hearing all sorts of odd stories. Weird things going on right now.
