Just after Obama was elected last year a friend and I had a conversation about interracial relationships. He was under the belief that because America elected their first black president, more white women would start dating black men. So seeing we are nearing the one year anniversary of Obama's presidency (yes I know its 2 months away) I'm curious, is this the case. Have things started to change??? Was this a fair assumption on my friends behalf???
I am not so sure if the election of Obama will have a positive or negative effect on the prevalence of such relationships. It seems like a culture will have its way regardless of what is occurring in the halls of power. To be honest, I'd prefer to look at Obama's ascendancy as an example of black success through the use of a cunning intellectual ability and excellent skill set, rather than the stereotypical means (sports, music) typically associated with being black and talented. Whether that turns on a higher percentage of non-black women is incidental to my concerns, and besides many African-American men are nothing like Obama.
Slowly but surely, yes. In my city as well as other places I've observed, it's becoming like the crack epidemic of the 1980's.:smt003
Saty, there is no doubting Obama's intellectual ability and skill set, he wouldn't be where he is today without them. I think the point my friend was trying to make is that women who were afraid to date outside of their race before the election may feel the acceptance to do so now there is a black man in power.
IR in america is evolving but i would be hard pressed to say that it is because of obama...america is just now seeing it's first significant generation of bi-racials enter adulthood...men like obama are not the norm and if anything he and michelle represent the black community as a solid family with 2 beautiful girls and let's not forget michelle's mother is also part of the package... michelle's brother is married to a ww and they reside in oregon...this was played down during the election and they have stayed away from the spotlight... as far as a growing number if IR couples in america...yes, it is happening...i see it everywhere now...sometimes i find myself just wanting to take pictures and catalog all of the beautiful couples i see when i travel...i think the increase has more to do with the way women are evolving in education, careers and self reliance...women used to worry about being shunned from their families...now there has been a power shift and the fear has been diluted...
I went to school with lots of biracial kids. Best girlfriends was mexican/german, black/korean, black-cuban/white, and one regular ol white girl LOL. During these conversations I feel like I must not have even grown up in the same country as the rest of yall.
Thank u! what type of smily should I use to make it clear that I am joking sometimes?? seems like some people are not getting it, even when I think it is absolutly clear.
Any of these would do the trick, though I thought the cool one was self-explanatory. LOL. :smt081 And you get the idea.
