Shroud of Turin

In honor of Easter, I figured I'd start this thread, even though Easter is nearly over. LOL.

Tonight, at my sister's house, we watched a program that they had recorded on the History Channel called "The Real Face of Jesus" or something along those lines.

Anyway, the Shroud of Turin has always fascinated me. And I've hemmed and hawed about it being authentic or an excellent forgery. Especially considering that carbon dating has dated it only to the 14th century.

This program we watched tonight really opened my eyes to the possibility that it could really be authentic. Now, unless Jesus comes down, points to the Shroud of Turin and says "that's what my dead body was laying in before my body resurrected", it can never be proven to be authentic.

However, the fact that aside from the carbon dating (which the date can be explained away), science has been studying it for decades and can't prove it's a forgery (though it also can't prove it's authentic) which makes me wonder if it truly is the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.

It was a fascinating program and it showed some 3-dimension imprints on the cloth that can't be seen with the naked eye, which helps prove that it was used on a real person. They also think that the imprint was made by radiation which could only have happened by a bright light - which is how his body disappeared. Fascinating stuff!!

What are your thoughts on the Shroud of Turin? Real or Fake? Fascinating relic?

 

Now here's the bigger question, does it matter?

I'm not a very religious person, but I do find religious artifacts (actually artifacts in general) fascinating. And having visited Israel and the places where Jesus allegedly walked was a pretty profound experience.

I find the whole subject interesting!

 

I'm not a cynic I think the legend of Jesus Christ is amazing. I just think we as people spend too much time on things like the shroud and the holy grail and not enough time on the teachings. How was israel I've always wanted to go

 

Ah, I see. Well, I'm not one to just blindly have faith in something, so having concrete proof would help me out. LOL.

I would recommend Israel to everyone. I went on a biblical archaeological dig and having been raised Catholic and not really knowing much about the Bible, it was fascinating to be around people who devoted their lives to proving the stories in the Bible. I learned so much and just the stories that accompanied the tours of the country astounded me.

I want to go back there. The air just feels different there.

Being in that region makes me wonder why the seat of monotheistic religions seem to be centered there and the fact that there has been fighting there for millenia, makes me wonder about the true significance of that entire region.

 

I watched a show several years ago on the Shroud of Turin. After watching I am convinced it's real. Then thinking about that show, I thought the image then is what Jesus really looked like not some image in your mind or what someone else "believes" he looked like.

 

Yeah, this program showed what they believe was the face of Jesus (or the man who was buried in the shroud). It was creepy, but cool at the same time.

 

I just wonder why the image of God matters so much. God is like any other important entity in my what they look like pales in comparison to what they do.

 

I thought this was a discussion about the image of Jesus Christ, isn't it? I don't think they're saying the image of God.

 

I saw a part of it last week. Is it me or isn't Jesus supposed to look more Middle Eastern or even Africanesque. The one they showed looked like the (excuse me, cause everyone has their own image of what they perceive Jesus to look like), "White" version of Jesus.

Jesus is God. The Holy Trinity. Jesus is suppose to be the personification of God. God shaped into human form.

But technically it was Jesus in that tomb. The imprint will be his face.

 

The picture of the face they recreated looked a bit middle eastern. It was really fascinating.

I saw the part when they were debating which way to go about it. The imprint part and the layering of it.

That Wiki page is interesting. That's why I said everyone has their own image of how they perceive him.

I'm Jewish, but it's interesting since I like Anthropology.
