Let's also ignore the fact that IF any slaves were lucky enough to purchase their freedom there was no guarantee that they would remain free. ANY white slaver could just take them again and put them back in slavery. There was no legal recourse for blacks in the south. As far as keeping their promises, I don't think that we need to look very hard for the answer. When slavery was abolished the south installed the former slaves as sharecroppers, which was de facto slavery. The best predictor of future behavior to past behavior.
So, what does the mention of division among black people have to do with a discussion between a WW and a BM?? On another topic that you mentioned earlier regarding black men fighting for the confederacy. I know that there were slaves who, when the master was sick, said, are WE sick master? But, do you think there might have been a bit of intimidation, force, threats or violence, not to mention brainwashing involved in getting black men to fight for the confederacy...

The legacy of the Black Code, Blue Laws (don't believe the hype that it was just about religion), and Jim Crow STILL to this day has an affect on black american life. I wonder how many people on here would have an appreciation for honest Abe if they knew the truth about his thoughts on blacks. How many people here knew that Lincoln thought integration would not work, and that the solution was to send freed slaves back to Africa. That's what people don't want to hear. It is also correct that slavery was not a focal point of the Civil War.
