Digusting, not anywhere near the same thing. If anyone EVER tries to argue that the southern cause to keep people in human bondage is ANYTHING like the struggle to get Brits off our island, then I will have to high five their face.

Bosoxlady, the Irish in the South fought for the Confederacy with a Irish Division. The North had one as well. The 1863 Draft Riots were bad as well, did you see the movie Streets of New York? It mentioned the riots.

I knew the off the boat micks from the Civil War era did not want to fight because they had just left the poverty at home and did not want the job competition that they presumed the end of slavery would bring about. I am from one of 5 families in our county that had NO ONE migrate until the 1970s when the troubles started. On the island itself, we have no problem with black people, I have brought my boyfriend home with me and things are fine.

I have very little patience with Irish_Americans who don't know the history and culture of my country. If they knew the meaning of the Ulster flag and the flag of the republic, they sure as hell would never fly it. This is the one that raises tensions the most

This is the flag of the Orange Order. They have been called Britian's KKK with the goal of not having a new Ireland

You know how many Confederate Flags were on the slave ships? 0, not a single one.

However a huge majority of the slave ships had American Flags displayed on them.

Is the American Flag a sign of racism?

Really? Huh, well the slave trade was BANNED in 1801. The US became independentin 1776. The slave trade began in America in 1609. It would venturen that they flew Spanish, Britihs, Portuguese, and Dutch flags. So your assertion that the "huge majority" flew the US flag is flawed. You lack of knowledge is staggering.

It doesn't matter if the flag is for Southern pride. It was the symbol of a nation who's whole premise for existing was to keep human bondage legal. bottom line: IF WHITE SUPREMIST GROUPS USE IT IT IS RACIST!!!!!!!!!! Surely even a simpleton like you can get that Nico.:smt119

I was wrong about "huge majority", but the fact of the matter is that The American Flag was displayed on some slave ships.
The people controlling those ships have done more against black people then white supremest groups have ever done. Those people sailing the ships were racist, so why isn't the American flag considered a sign of racism?

Also there were some leaders of the Confederate army who were against slavery, while there were some leaders of The Union who were pro-slavery.

If you wanna talk about knowledge then surely you know that The Civil War wasn't just about slavery, it was about taxes and other things also.
So with that being said The Confederate Flag wasn't made to represent slavery, it was made to represent..........

wait for it......

wait

The Southern Way of Life.

Not racism.

Ah but that's where you run into a fork in the road.

Now can we both agree that the OVERALL symbol that the confederate flag represented was the southern way of life?

I know it may be hard to understand but the Confederate Leaders had no idea the KKK was gonna be using their flags hundreds of years later to represent racism .

Just like whoever invented the swastika had no idea Hitler was gonna take it and flip the meaning of it.

Are you with me on that?

Not at all because people fighting to fly the Confederate Flag want to go back to a south where negroes knew their place and white people reigned supreme. They want the quiter simpler times their grand parents talked about with glossy eyes. I don't see how you don't get that.

You're stretching, that's not what I asked.

It's simple

What was the Confederate Flag created to represent?
A. Southern way of life
or
B. Slavery and Racism.

And the reason you are so hell bent on proving that you're right and everyone else is so wrong when it comes to this particular topic is what again? And even if you were right (and you aren't) the significance of this is what in the larger scheme of things?

Yes it was. The South fought to keep their slaves. Right from their constitution
The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States, and shall have the right of transit and sojourn in any State of this Confederacy, with their slaves and other property; and the right of property in such slaves shall not be impaired.
