The fact that you are Black and didn't know of its existence (and I'm positive 99.9% of Americans don't know either), I'm confident it's "wow" effect and 'power' as an insult word is negligible. If I'm asked whether an American White man would be questioned about love for his race, I think the answer is yes, if he made a statement similar to Haynesworth. It's difficult to understand how any man can dismiss an entire race of women, especially his own. I know that I'm not alone in this regard as many of the WW and BM on this site, while expressing their preference for BM and WW respectively, admit their openness to dating those of their own and other races. I believe that many interracial relationships are conceived in the same way as other relationships, attraction, mutual interests and shared goals. However, I don’t dismiss the concept of self-hate in this case or others. I also think that this phenomenon is uniquely American as other ethnicities don’t have a similar historical and continuous problem with racial prejudice affecting their lives. Millions of Black Africans were displaced, taken to a new country and robbed of their language, culture and racial identity. They were forced to accept the culture of their masters, without having the same rights. Is it unbelievable with racial intolerance and violence, historically and currently, that they as well as their descendants might idealize WW as a way of having that privileged life? You can observe people from certain socio-economic groups spending disproportionally on material items in an effort to experience what it's like to live well. Interracial dating for some coming from this background may be another opportunity to experience “living well”. Consider the impact of generations of living in a society where you are devalued. Might it affect your psyche, unconsciously, and focus the direction of your relationships? A famous experiment, the “doll test”, was used by pyschologists in 1940 to show the effect of segregation on Black kids. When presented with a choice of two dolls, one white and the other black, most of the children preferred the white dolls and attributed positive characteristics to those dolls. Ironically, this test was repeated more than 60 years later and the results were consistent with earlier tests. I don’t know if a child can overcome the effect of such negative societal influences. I also don’t know if racial confusion, self-hate or the stupidity of an egotistical athelete is responsible for his ridiculous statement of defense. But, I wouldn't dismiss the thought out of hand.
