This is the first that I've found this section so I thought I'd add what I think is obvious: to get ahead, figure out what you love, get an education in it and make sure it's somehow useful to society so that you can get paid doing it.
this doesn't apply to just college either. you can go to a trade school for 6 months-1 year, learn a good skill, and get paid 16-18 dollars an hour starting off somewhere. You won't be rich, but it's a good alternative to slaving away at a fast food place in Philly, making 7 dollars an hour with NO benefits. You can always do college later too, if you decide to do that. So many people turn to selling drugs or god knows what else that's illegal, and that's not too good, especially if you get pinched.:smt095

on the real tho...i wish i was able to live at home and work part time, while doing school full time. Your loans would be astronomical, but just think of the endless potential you'd have access to. You'd have no problem becoming a medical doctor with a strong family to support your basic needs, during your unpaid periods of learning.
Amen to that my friend. Some people don't get how much of a blessing it is to not have to work full time while in school. It takes away from your performance big time.
which is why i think there should be some kind of system established to bring about balance. I think people that can verify full-time work status, should be given extended test dates/final grade turn ins. You'd still have to learn the material, but you'll be given a little slack when it came to getting those big tests done.
But they won't do that because we know how much this country loves to talk about equality but rarely practice it.

This would be amazing to have as an opportunity. Totally agree. I had to work 3 part time jobs to make ends meet for the first bunch of years of my post secondary education. Guess I should have applied for more scholarships lol. Wouldn't that be nice... More access to post secondary for everyone, even those of us from the wrong side of the tracts....
They are trying to shut down loans like you wouldn't believe. I suggest to everyone get as much education as you can before 2012 because when the Republicans win(and they will believe that) all government aide for education will be shut down and the only way will be banks with very high interest rates.
meanwhile the PRICE of education is going upwards do you see what's going on? they're choking off the middle class because it's too congested many people push for getting degrees, but if everyone had one, that means someone would get stuck flipping burgers with a bachelors in engineering

lol the philadelphia police dept is looking to make 60 credits one of their requirements for 2012 a good paying city job with good benefits, is now becoming that much harder to get you're seriously better off going to a community college and getting an associates, or at least 60 credits to transfer to a more expensive 4-year college
I'm going to be looking into a nutrition course this week. Hopefully it will be via correspondence and at the same school that I received my certificate in massage...working full-time with 2 kids doesn't give me a lot of spare time and if I can go through the same cOllege, I may not have to do the anatomy & physiology classes again...
I say it should be a freaking 4 year degree. A B.S in sociology or psychology. Some of these cops don't know how to interact with the public. Just knowing how to interact could be the difference between life or death or paying to put someone in prison who could have been consoled(sp).
In my home city, the vast majority of police officers have 4 year degrees. My ex for example, had a degree in sociology with a minor in criminology. But truly nothing prepares a person for the crap they have to put up with all day long everyday. Tarshi: good for you!!! I think it is a Canadian thing Athena. On the department I worked for you HAD to have a BA. Not college, a BA. They also paid for graduate studies so I got my first Masters courtesy of them. I can't believe departments are hiring without a post secondary education. It didn't help much when I was getting shot at, but it sure helped when I was on the stand testifying.
