because of all that crunk, I'll let East coast have this much; you set the bar, you have skill and soul... but West Coast raised that bar and added some more to it... East and West actually have something to talk about. The South only talks about f*cking b*tches, getting f*cked up, and money that's not called rap that's called talking out of your ass.
I may be wrong, but it appears that the regions are placing progressively less emphasis on 'skills', i.e. the importance of flow, command of the language, etc, and more and more on beats, or just booty-shaking. I could be wrong, but that's the way it appears to me. And with each regional shift, lyrics are (generally, not totally) relegated to a lower and lower status. NYC/the East set the standard for microphone fetishism and the intense focus on lyrics and skills. The West appears to place less emphasis on the MC and began the move toward placing the music in front (although there are producers from the East who place crate diggin' on another level, like Pete Rock, Premier, Beatnuts, X-Ecutioners). The West still has some microphone freaks though. And the Midwest and South place even less focus on skills, even though in each region there are definitely exceptions to the rule (Common, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Pitbull, David Banner, anyone?). And every once in awhile the artists that are big in those latter regions can still surprise with a nice track that brings it all together.
IMO, each region has its purpose and place. If I just want to dance and get freaky as hell...I'm listening to some dirty south! If I want to bump my subs all over town...I'm playing that west coast shit (BEST beats ever). I definitely gravitate towards west coast rap...I NEED a good beat and bass, in addition to lyrics. WC has all that...they combine beats and lyrics which makes their tracks undeniably superior East coat rap typically, in my opinion, lacks rhythm. It's just talking, not flowing. I know we have a lot of east coast fans here, so Raider ain't making any friends with this level of honestly lol.
We tend to see A lot of things the same! This I would have to disagree with babes. Honestly, I think EC is the most lyrical of the three. Example: Nas. I'm a southern guy so I typically gravitate here, but talking, Example: 2012-13 Lil Wayne. TDK and I clash on music but I think he's going to agree. Lol
