Man needs to go outside himself in order to find repose and reveal himself. -José MartÃ, revolutionary and poet (1853-1895)
The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second. -John Steinbeck, novelist, Nobel laureate (1902-1968)
Every heart has its secret sorrows, which the world knows not, and oftentimes we call a man cold, when he is only sad. -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
There are many ways to be free. One of them is to transcend reality by imagination, as I try to do. -Anais Nin, writer (1903-1977
Persons appear to us according to the light we throw upon them from our own minds. -Laura Ingalls Wilder, novelist (1867-1957)
Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated. - Coretta Scott King.
"If the book and my brain are both the work of the same infinite God, whose fault is it that the book and the brain do not agree? Either God should have written a book to fit my brain, or should have made my brain to fit his book. The inspiration of the Bible depends upon the ignorance of him who reads." ~Robert G. Ingersoll
When are your dreams dependent on someone else? I'm the only one responsible for my goals and aspirations so this one hit home for me.
Dreams aren't dependent on anyone else, but making them happen sometimes is...like for me. My dream is to be a screenwriter in Hollywood. In order to sell a screenplay, I have to not only be good (which I am, LOL), but I have to be in the right place at the right time with the right script that they're looking for. Sometimes dreams are easy to achieve on your own, and sometimes they are dependent on others (ranging from a small extent to a large extent) to help make it happen.
Very true. How we interpret some of these quotes is largely dependent on where we are in our lives, I guess. Fresh out of a marriage, that's not even on my radar lol. I read this quote and instantly thought of my fitness and educational goals. I agree that the obstacles to obtaining our goals are at times out of our control. There's a few things standing in my way of my educational goals (about $80,000 and making time 6 days a week for class when I've got two little ones at home lol). In my case, it's about sacrifice - what I'm willing to give up to attain my ultimate educational goal. There will certainly always be things outside our control, but to me dedication/determination and not selling ourselves on why it can't happen are incredibly important. If I can't reach my goal via plan a, I'll go to plan b-z until I succeed. Stubborn as hell Making it in Hollywood is a whole other animal! Good luck to you though, I wish you nothing but success!
