Black men vs black men

I hear you Arch, I have said that I am reserving judgement, that being said, I have seen much of the same language, and approach, especially this quote ("who murders at our rate? again...we make up 6% of the population but half the murders?") that he is using, from trolls of the past.

If he posted proposed solutions, mentoring programs, education reform, numerous positive outreach programs that target youth, employment reforms, ect., without re-hashing the same old statistics, then perhaps my radar would not have been triggered.

He initiated conversation. From there, any of us could have responded with proposed solutions, mentoring programs, education reform, outreach programs, employment reform, etc.,

Yay! I'm glad to see some members I truly respect weighing in on this subject. I know this isn't my issue or something I will ever struggle with, but I am interested in it because it is relevant to half our members here and the men I date. The more educated I am, the more sympathetic I can be and the more prepared I am to discuss it with others who have a different perspective.

As soon as its a buff policeman who brings this up you're all in. This is far from the first time its been mentioned lol.

I wasn't talking about him when I mentioned members that I respect. I don't know him well enough to say that. But as for it being mentioned before, yes it has, but usually by someone who is disgusted and/or ashamed. The topic was raised this time by someone who sees it as part of his job all the time, and I have to think it can be pretty depressing.

I'm not that shallow, TDK. Thought you might have figured that out by now.

Exactly. That was my initial impression too, especially when he compares the outrage about the trayvon martin case to our lack of response to the inner city "black men vs black men" stuff.

Fact is, those are two wildly different issues. The gang violence is tragic, but to a certain extent avoidable, plus there are laws in place to see that the culprits get sentences.

However, when just any vigilante/bully with a gun can stalk down and kill your sons with impunity, where can you go to avoid that? What can you do to avoid that?

racist site types often try to compare the two issues or use one to justify the other.

And I'll say it again: the outrage about the trayvon case was because they were initially just going to let zimmerman walk (and the fact that they are soon going to let him walk).

Also in florida, in November last year, a white man, Michael Dunn, shot and killed a black teen, Jordan Davis, over Davis playing loud rap music in his car. Where's the outrage over that? Things are pretty quiet, because everyone is cooly letting the law take its course.

The cops in this case weren't going to just let the killer walk, so there was no public outcry. Though he may walk in the future (Florida being what it is), the law is taking its course, just like when a black teen kills a white man.

The Trayvon Martin case is different. When we don't have equal protection under the law, ALL our children are at risk. Good kids, bad kids, gangstas, whatever. So there should be outrage and outcry, more than you see for inner city gang-related killings.

Inner city culture may not protect us, but the law is supposed to. Everyone should want the law to protect everyone, otherwise we have big mess

That was my take on it, too. It's interesting to hear about it from the perspective of someone in law enforcement, especially since that's a viewpoint we don't get to hear all that often.

I decided to post a little research on something I have both a professional and personal investment in. Black men killing black men. Nothing new. And no one seems to really care, especially in the black community. We can rally around the country for tragedies like Travaugn Martin but when it comes to slaughtering ourselves it seems few care. Politicians, preachers, the public at large just doesn’t care…however, since we are visual proof based society (sans some conservatives) I thought it best to present it numerically.

Black men make up about 6% of the population but account for over half the murders. 9 out of 10 killed are murdered by another black man. That means that 7000 black men are murdered each year and 94% are killed by another black man. Between 1976 and 2011 there were 279,384 black murder victims which means about 262,621 were murdered by other blacks according to Bureau of Justice Statistics. Lot of dead “solders” because some black men see such death/pain as a rite of passage or badge of honor….but they may feel this way because in essence both physically, emotionally, mentally even financially, it is a war.

Black Fatalities in Korean War totaled 3075, Vietnam 7243, and all wars since 1980 (I was born in 82) 8197. That comes to 18,515, far from the 6 figure number above and just over twice the yearly average. What’s even more alarming is a study by the Tuskegee institute that’s estimates during the years 1882 and 1968 3,446 black men were lynched by whites, still far from what we do to one another today.

But this is America right? What about other major conflicts in the world…for the sake of argument, lets take out Government interference ie Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam and just go with mostly civilian populations that slaughter one another. Palestine/Israeli and Irish conflict come to mind. Both have struggles that are around the same 35-40 year period and comparable populations if you are considering only black males. The Irish conflict 1969-2010 cost the lives 3,568 people. The Palestine/Israeli conflict since the war began in 1948 have cost the lives of 14,500, still small in comparison of what black men in this country do to one another.

To call this anything but war is painfully unrealistic, and reality is, most of us are not really doing or saying anything about it. We will rally against great injustice like the Jena 6, Travaugn Martin as mentioned above, and any black person hurt, injured or killed by police or other ethnic groups yet we when we slaughter each other, there is silence and those (like my black ass) that are aberrations and try to alert the community at large to such aversions are shunned and ostracized.

Last year Detroit had 0ver 400 murders, and well over 2000 shootings. What do you call this other than War?

Would you add jealousy to the list? Social and material jealousy also play a factor not in murder, but damage to reputation or damage to property to violence against a person regardless of race.

Since Wednesday afternoon, 11 people have been killed, 61 wounded in Chicago. Good press.

Have a great day.

Since the Trayvon Martin shooting, 1018 black Americans have been shot and killed by other black Americans in violent crime in our country. ....but because of the highly visible and symbolic value
of convicting a George Zimmerman is at stake, all the press and all the emotional energy is displaced and invested there instead of on the (in house) genocide. ..

Repped and then some. No word from Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. How convenient.

Agreed...the way Sanford handled that was atrocious.

I dont have any solutions...not short term anyway. But I would start with education...something that has been mentioned here couple times....problem is....how do you get those stuck in ignorance and inertia to care...you cant. But we can put money into public education to save their children. Just a start....we could also just sue the US education dept for never really enforcing Brown vs Board of Education. but thats a long shot. all of it is really

Hmmm
Money goes where money flows. And none of the big wigs see the long term payoff of a well educated and polite society.

It's a me and mine right now mentality. Sorry..but education is going to be the last thing government spends money. In an aristocracy (which, lets face it, isn't that what we've become in many respects?) they need the poor and downtrodden to piss all over. They like it that way.

Dollars before people.
Nothing is going to change that soon. And maybe nothing will change that ever.

Can I just say I'm am so loving the black men at WWBM right now.

This whole thread has been graceful and the points made in it have been beautiful worded and border on sheer genius.

You all make me proud.
Not that that's the end all be all of everything.
