I had a hard time getting into a hotel one night without my visa, MUCH LESS A COUNTRY It just so happened that I forgot my credit cards at home and they wouldn't accept cash for some reason. Go figure!! Luckily the girl I was with had some plastic on her or I probably wouldn't have gotten laid.

The reasons it costs more is because he has no credit history in your country.

I ran into the same problem when my ex-husband from Africa got his US drivers license. We paid OUTRAGEOUS costs for insurance because he had no history in this country so was considered an at risk driver, even though he had driven for years w/o one accident.

It was the same when he wanted to buy a car. Thank God I was smart enough by then not to cosign with him. But they charged him more because of no credit history.

    OMG!!!!

That is one of the most terrible things I have ever heard. I am so sorry. I hope my relationship does not turn out like that. I would be devastated. And by the way, don't shut your mouth. You have great advice and experience in this area. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Alessandra,

Please make sure that you've read ALL of the details about sponsoring someone into Canada. From what I was told, if you get married in order to sponsor your man, you are also financially responsible for him for a loooooong time even if you get divorced! I am really not sure, but please look into it - just so you can make an informed decision.

Also (insert big sister tone here) I don't know if you know very much about Senegal or the Senegalese culture, but please be aware that Senegalese men tend to be incredible sweet talkers! Trust me... I've been there! I have dated 2 in the past and I was convinced by both of them to do things that I would not normally do! I am a strong and independent woman and for some reason, these 2 both new exactly how to get to me!! Luckily I was not "scammed" in financial terms, but I would say that I was emotionally scammed.

Now, I have only dated 2 Senegalese men and so, of course, this does not apply to every single one of them on the planet... but just know that this is the reputation that they have. They can be very good with words and manipulation.

I have no doubt that you are a smart girl, but I just thought I should share. I wish someone had told me this a few years ago!!

    Good luck!

    Hey PearlGirl

Thanks for the advice! Being around them I know what you mean by sweet talkers. They sure are. But my man is different then most. He was in Canada for 7 years to study school. And he was in the USA for 2 years. So he is very "Westernized" and he has a French citizenship. He is also not as emotional or sweet as most other Senegalese men are. The first one I was with was like "marry me and I love you" like after the second week together! too much. I won't be getting married for mosty likely 2 years until 2008. Neither of us are in rush. He can come and go basically as he pleases to Canada because he has a good record here and what not and with his French citizenship. Thanks for all your concern though. And I would defineatly not marry anyone right away just to sponsor him. This will sound harsh but I would rather have him in Senegal then marry him without knowing him inside and out.

I'll keep my eyes out for anything suspicious and thanks so much for your advice.

    Good Girl!
You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders and are being very logical in this! Phew! I am completely re-assured. I know that we are strangers, but I would just hate for anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, the way I was!

Good luck with all this and keep us posted on the details!
