As we get closer to the start of month FIVE of mandatory mask wearing here in Illinois, I'd love to know what their end game is in all of this.

Like my brother said: we're never going to see phase 5 at this point.

I'm all doom and gloom about this, but I doubt we'll ever get to phase 5 and never have to wear a mask again.

I was kind of behind the mask thing when it started May 1st. But, as the months dragged on with no end in sight, I don't see how this isn't political anymore. We gave the politicians an inch and now they're taking a mile.

I'm new to this thread. @Bliss , is the complaint that no one should have to wear a mask or socially distance because it doesn't help? Or is it that no one should have to wear a mask or socially distance because they just don't want to wear a mask or socially distance?

I legit wanna understand your position and the reasoning for it. School me!

A bit of both..
I think we've given up way too much liberty, way of life, freedoms and income for this virus.

This here pretty much sums up how l feel ATM...

I don't believe the flash outbreak stories anymore. I think the mainstream media is exaggerating or inflating the counts to influence the election.

I got tested (required for a doc appointment) and it was the most horrific experience of my life!!, lol. I almost cried like a baby. That shit HURTS!! And the pain STAYS with you!

It depends on how much common sense you think people have. A negative test doesn't necessarily mean negative but a positive test means you need to quarantine yourself or at least get tested by a professional.

Negative means keep proceeding with caution but if you're not being cautious to begin with it's not much of a help.

The FDA probably thinks people don't have common sense. What do you think?

Great, but the important factor is making sure people who test at home actually stay home if their test is positive. I can already picture people ignoring the results and going out anyway.

The 1st daily quick test got FDA approved yesterday:

North suburban-based Abbott Labs says it has received FDA approval for its new COVID-19 antigen test which delivers results in about 15 minutes.

EDIT:

Politco just put out an article that the Trump Administration is immediately jumping on these new $5 tests from Abbott immediately:

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/27/trump-rapid-coronavirus-tests-403602
President Donald Trump plans to unveil a major expansion of rapid coronavirus testing on Thursday, according to three individuals familiar with the upcoming announcement.

Trump will announce that the administration has struck a $750 million deal to acquire 150 million tests from Abbott Laboratories, which the individuals said are set to be deployed in nursing homes, schools and other areas with populations at high risk.

Abbott received an emergency authorization from the FDA on Wednesday for the rapid test, which costs $5 and can produce results in 15 minutes without the use of any lab equipment. Abbott has said that it will be able to produce about 50 million tests per month by October.

The move would represent a significant expansion of the nation's coronavirus testing, which has experienced frequent bottlenecks in recent months that prevented rapid turnaround of test results. The United States has tested about 22 million people in the last month.

LOL, that's bullshit. Last time I checked Mexico was having their own issues with the Pandemic, so much so that illegals are crossing the border to get healthcare in the U.S. which is a factor why these border states been having spikes in cases this Summer.

Now that I think of it, I think that the Meme was made back in the 2008 recession and just didn't age well. Anyway this country is better off overall than Mexico which isn't saying much because we have 1st world money and suck ass compared to first World countries.

The partisanship and religious nutbags have ruined the quality of life and made America look stupid. It's in a class of it's own now. I would call it second world. First world money without the quality of life of a first world country. Just a bunch of drama with people that's too ignorant and emotionally fractured to be fully functional and enjoy the wealth and economic might of the country.

So yeah US >>>> Mexico brag on that because if you compare it to any country of comparable wealth it sucks ass.

I'm not believing them either. And it really became clear to me when about 3 weeks before school started, all we heard were outbreaks among children and teachers.

And now there are outbreaks among college students.

How coincidental is that? You don't hear about the young people until right before they're supposed to start school.

My daughter's school district had a great hybrid plan. Then about a week before their school started, the teacher's union forced them to go all online.

And their endgame with this is what?? I saw this on Facebook and I posted it, of course no one commented, though one person like it, but it perfectly sums up my feelings on this pandemic:

"Is there someone out there who can tell me what our end game is with the Rona?
What is the magic formula that is going to allow us to sound the all clear? Is it zero cases? The only way that will happen is if we just stop testing and stop reporting.
Is it a vaccine
1f489.png
? It took 25 years for a chicken pox vaccine to be developed. The smallpox inoculation was discovered in 1776 the last known natural case was in 1977. We have a flu vaccine that is only 40 to 60% effective and less than half of the US population chooses to get one, and roughly 20,000 Americans still die of the flu or flu complications. Oh, you'll mandate it, like other vaccines are mandated in order to attend school, travel to some foreign countries, etc. We already have a growing number of anti vaxxers refusing proven, tested, well known vaccines that have been administered for decades but aren’t necessarily safe! Do you really think people will flock to get a fast tracked, quickly tested vaccine, whose long term side effects and overall efficiency are anyone's best guess? How long are we going to cancel and postpone and reconsider?
You aren't doing in person school until second quarter? What if October's numbers are the same as August's?
You moved football to spring? What if next March is worse than this one was?
When do we decide quality of life outweighs the risks?
I understand Covid can be deadly or very dangerous for SOME people, so is shellfish, peanut butter and bee stings. We take risks multiple times a day without a second thought.
We know driving a car can be dangerous, we don't leave it in the garage. We know the dangers of smoking, drinking and eating fried foods, we do it anyway. We speed, we don't buckle our seatbelts, we take more than directed and quite a few of us don't think twice about unprotected whoopie, we just hop right in (or on.)
Is hugging Grandma really more dangerous than rush hour on the freeway? Is going to the bar with friends after work more risky than 4 day old gas station sushi? Or operating a chainsaw? When and how did we so quickly lose our free will?
Is there a waiver somewhere I can sign that says, "I understand the risks, but I choose a life with Hugs and Smiles, and the State Fair and Concerts and Homecoming."
2705.png
I understand that there is a minuscule possibility I could die, but I will most likely end up feeling like crap for a few days.
2705.png
I understand I could possibly pass it to someone else, if I'm not careful, but I can pass any virus onto someone else.
I'm starting to ramble and I apologize, but I'm struggling to see where or how this ends. We get busy living or we get busy dying.
When God decides it's your time, you don't get any mulligans, so I guess I would rather spend my time enjoying it and living in the moment and not worrying about what ifs and maybes, and I bet I'm not the only one."

Thanks for the reply. I'll say I agree with two out of three of those lol. I guess we disagree on mask wearing. Not so much on a "right to wear or not" level. I just think of it as being considerate of those who might get sick, a tiny sacrifice to make.

But I definitely agree that this, like everything else, has been politicized to all our detriment. Got a question tho. Do you think Trump has done a good job of handling the virus since January? Thanks for your constructive responses!

https://thehill.com/opinion/healthc...cal-missing-element-to-coronavirus-task-force
Scott Atlas was added to President Trump's Coronavirus Task Force this month, and he quickly took center stage alongside the president. While he lacks the infectious-disease credentials of task force coordinator Deborah Birx, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head Anthony Fauci or Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Atlas has a long history as a top health policy expert at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. Perhaps even more important, he brings a fresh perspective to approaching the pandemic.

Atlas was a senior health adviser for Republican presidential candidates in 2008, 2012 and 2016, as well as for members of Congress. At the Hoover Institution, he focuses on public-private partnerships in health care, innovation and the impact of biotechnology and incorporating economic factors to derive practical solutions. He is co-director of Hoover's "Socialism and Free Market Capitalism: The Human Prosperity Project."

He has appeared with me on "Doctor Radio Reports" on SiriusXM, where he presented himself as an anti-fear-monger, a non-alarmist who bases his views on logic and data. Nevertheless, his background as a non-virologist who is no longer seeing patients has left him subject to some media attacks. This seems completely unfair. There already are several respected virologists on the task force, but not enough health policy or public health experts.

Dr. Atlas is the editor of a leading textbook in the medical field, "Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain and Spine." He ran Stanford's neuroradiology department for many years and trained some of our country's best radiologists. The critical thinking involved in that task is hardly irrelevant to assessing today's pandemic. Keep in mind that, as a top neuroradiologist, Atlas was trained — and has trained others — to perform a sober analysis of an image based on complex pattern recognition; he has brought this ability to his career in health policy. The rationality needed to examine potential brain cancer without emotion also is essential to fight the fear and hysteria that has shrouded COVID-19. A great neuroradiologist can quickly tell you the difference on an MRI between a stroke and an abscess, or a malignant versus a benign tumor. Since the results alter lives, the radiologist must be extremely meticulous.

One of Atlas's peers and a colleague of mine agrees. "Throughout our friendship of more than 35 years, Dr. Atlas has always impressed with his strong expertise in analyzing public health challenges and developing concrete solutions that are based on science and data, the cornerstones of any legitimate response to COVID or other health issues," says Robert I. Grossman, M.D., dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health and a fellow world-renowned neuroradiologist. Dr. Grossman believes Atlas "will contribute significantly to these efforts."

With the same kinds of accuracy and precision as he has used in medicine and health policy, Atlas has helped to distinguish between burgeoning new case numbers of COVID-19 in Florida, Texas and California and the fact that the death rate has not been climbing. He has noted that children tend to have much milder cases and that our public health priority should remain to protect those most at risk. This analysis seemed prescient when, this past Monday, the number of new cases in Florida dropped to 2,678 with 87 deaths and, on Tuesday, new cases remained below 4,000.

When it comes to masks, Atlas has echoed President Trump's position that masks are especially important "if you aren't able to social-distance or if you are in proximity to a high-risk individual." The goal, according to Atlas, is "stopping the deaths by protecting the high-risk people. Preventing hospital overcrowding while you safely reopen society."

Recent studies have connected using masks with the decreased transmission of coronavirus in health care workers as well as in large populations, but this is still not complete proof.

Though he, too, believes in masks, Atlas's focus has been more about the excessive emotions in play, saying that masks have been "highlighted and sensationalized ... way out of proportion." This is a bold, relevant perspective.

In a larger sense, Atlas is concerned with the major role that fear has played in public messaging throughout the pandemic. "It's stemming from a massive amount of fear bordering on hysteria. And this is a real problem because public policy is supposed to be taking into consideration not just stopping COVID-19 at all costs but understanding the impact on people of what you do and what you say. And that's been a failure of some of the people who are speaking out on this … we need to live in a rational world, and we need to show people that we use critical thinking …. the reality is, there are reasons to wear a mask."

Dr. Atlas has a calm approach, one that relies on data analysis and reasoning. And if he is accused of under-reacting, there is certainly plenty of saber-rattling around to balance him out. So far, he appears to be working well with the virologists, including Dr. Fauci and has done his best to integrate with the team.

When the Oxford vaccine gets here I'll consider only if it's approved by the MHRA. Can't trust the FDA while Donny is president. He really needs to be voted out. We don't need air headed politicians politicizing medicine.

Damn did I just say that?

If you think this is a first world country, I strongly disagree. No one should ever have to say what I just said.
