Do you think the media you consumed growing up affected your preferences?

I hate those things so much. It limits what a person can be, regardless of race. However, I understand that many folks try to fit in anyway because they want to belong.

That’s awful. Sorry you had to deal with that kind of bullying, but it’s good that you’re past that.

 

While I can speak using Ebonics or AAVE, I usually just speak regular americanized english. I don't like the notion that being black is somehow synonymous/identical with acting poorly or speaking improperly and anything to the contrary makes you less than.

 

One of my mini-conspiracy theories is that we have been tricked into thinking some of the least productive traits of our culture are the only authentic aspects of being "Black." Like I said I grew up in the hood, hung around the projects, so by that logic how am I less "Black" than some dude growing up in a midwest suburb his entire life? Because he listens to more rap and talks a certain way? How does that make sense? lol

But I think forging my own path and becoming independent and thinking for myself in a way did lead to my dating white women. I remember they used to tell me they were evil and to stay away, that they had gross bodies and were ugly and I would look around and think...that certainly isn't true.

 

Mine still swear they’re “loose” or “easy” smh. Just sad all around. It’s like how can you be upset for being stereotyped but then turn around and stereotype someone else? Makes no sense

 

I got folks around me the same way too. I hate general statements about large groups of people. I think healthy and confident sexuality does look loose or easy to those that find it difficult to connect with others. There were way too many fine WW media figures to just act like they wasn't fine back in the 90's and 00's, when I was growing up.
