Oh, my, tucker, you have really done it now. Well, how dare you write such things like this frequently on the boards, along with LaydeezmanCris, SoCal, Mosiah, and other educated posters! You must be very jealous of white men and hate black women! Respect yourself and others! :p

It seems that things are very different over here.

I'm not saying that a doll depicting a negative image of any race is OK, I'm just playing devils advocate and posing the question. I personally wouldn't buy such a doll.

We know, Tash. We know. Nothing wrong with devil's advocate from time to time. That's what I like about you. Always offering an intelligent opinion without being one-sided. :) 8)

i know sardonic, its hard to have a real discussion anywhere in the USA nowadays. everyone assumes that it is wrong to criticize, to question and to believe in a right and wrong. the PC cops are always out in force and they think everything is relative except what they want to control.

but like my father always said, "youve got to stand for something or youll fall for anything" and we have to know the truth whether it hurts some people.

I have to admitt that I never heard about "golliwog" in my life until maybe a year ago, when I came across a similar discussion. When I first saw a picture of one, my first reaction was "what's all this about?". I too thought that the figure looks rather cute, despite the exaggerated and caricatured features, since it's not really uncommon to depict figures for children in an caricature-like exaggerated way. My favorite childhood figure "Kalle Wirsch" wasn't very flattering either but I still thought it's cute and I loved it.

But then, when I read up on the golliwog, and learned what it was about, I understood where the critics come from and I agree that it has to be kept away from children so that their minds will not be poisoned by it.

Topics like this show how incredible important it is that we never stop discussing things and that we always keep on communicating. There are still a lot of things we have a different perception of, not because of ignorance or mean-spiritness, but simply because of a different cultural background and a different history.

A person never really understands the negative symbol of the golliwog until he/she is called a wog
