Slavery By Another Name— Although slavery was abolished in 1865, a great number of freed slaves found themselves arrested and a part of the newly created Convict Leasing System. Prisons would lease its convicts out to private companies to do hard manual labor, with all of the proceeds going to the prisons. Although they were no longer “slaves”, they were beaten and whipped the same way enslaved blacks were treated. Shown above are 2 convicts inside of a pillory. A pillory was a wooden frame on a pole with holes through which a person’s head and hands were placed. The frame was then locked and the person was subjected to humiliation and ridicule in the hot sun for hours at a time as a form of punishment
