It's true, movies can't possibly encompass all the intricacies of a book. However they're getting very good at it these days!
Worst example of a movie not living up to the book, IMO: The Power of One. It was a shame they wasted that one on a 1990s production, I think if they made it again now they'd do a much better job. I suppose it's always possible. Here's hoping!
I'm one to read the book before seeing the movie and I'm ALMOST always disappointed...with a few exceptions:
The 8 hour miniseries of The Stand, which was on in the 90s was good.
The LOTR Trilogy was unbelievably good considering how intricate those books are.
Angels and Demons was much, much better than The Da Vinci Code.
The Harry Potter movies are fairly good, though they do lack something from the books.
The Stand was the 1st book I read by Stephen King. I've read at least 20 of his books since then. Most of the books turned into movies were terrible except for a few (IMO
Salem's Lot
Christine
The Shining
Pet Semetary
The rest of the movies were garbage...lol
I haven't read the LOTR books, but those movies were EXCELLENT! I can only imagine how good the books were! *
Oh yeah, The Shining was a GREAT movie, too. I saw Christine, but I wasn't really a fan of that book. I need to read his older books again. It's been so long and I loved so many of them: Cujo, The Shining, It, Pet Semetary, The Stand (is one of my all-time favorite books), the Dark Tower series, man I loved his older books.
The LOTR books are amazing. Though they're so bogged down with characters and details, I actually had to put the 3rd one down for about 6 months because I couldn't take it anymore. LOL. I highly recommend those books and the movies were an amazing tribute to the books. I am in awe of Peter Jackson for making such great films out of those books.
I read The Hobbit in like 3 days (which is a record for me). You should start with that one, if you're going to read the LOTR trilogy. :smt023
I'm not the scary type, but IT had me checkin over my shoulder! Pennywise was something else! Lol
The last 50 pages of Pet Semetary were intense! I was on the edge of my seat!* *
I forgot about The Hobbit. I read that back in grammer school. That was a good book too.
I'm gonna have to check out LOTR!
You're right. Books can get so detailed! People who don't like to read are missing out!
I'm not famaliar with that book/movie. What's it about?
I read all of those books when I was like 10-12 years old. I'd stay up late reading them, and then after I turned off the light, I'd hear the house settling and it sounded like someone was slowing creeping up our stairs. It's scared the bejesus out of me, but I wouldn't trade those memories for anything! LOL.
Those books were scary as hell!
I have similar memories of reading Pet Semetary.. I remeber the ending as a blood pressure challenger.... I think it was my first scary book I read and I was sold.
Yes Cannon - the LOTR's are fatastic! I think they did a spectacular job, lots of things from the books arent in the movies but thats ok, you cant get everything in and it is really fantastic!
You read those at what age????
Those books scared me when I was in my TWENTIES! Lol *
Cool. I think I'll check them out! I just picked up Gerald's Game by Stephen King. I'll start on LOTR when I'm done!
The Power Of One is an epic novel by Bryce Courtenay about a young boy growing up in South Africa. Its sequel Tandia is just as epic! They're both must-reads. Highly recommended!

Oh ok! That reminds me. I read the book Kaffir Boy years ago. It was about another boy growing up in South Africa and it was really good.
So you suggest I check these out too?
I read Gerald's Game. I didn't particularly like it.
