But there in lies the hypocrisy as if it to say at 16 I as a male can't determine for myself if I want to have sex with two women is ridiculous. We play this game to simplify something that doesn't need to be simplified. Circumstances and context matter. Critical thinking matters. A young man engaging in a threesome with two willing women is not abuse if he isn't coerced. It's incredibly hard to see him as a child when if he robbed and killed someone he'd be an adult. We are saying in one context despite capacity and choices your childhood is determined by age but in another breath saying its actions. Which is it?

It is a double standard, to be sure, but it's also important to note that a lot of these concerns are relative. The idea of a 16 year old as a child is a modern conception. 100 years ago he was an adult and expected to go out and establish himself in the world at that age. Even today in many parts of the world, fathers regularly take their sons to brothels to initiate their sons' sex lives with experienced prostitutes and it is considered natural.

I doubt he was taken advantage of in the molestation/rape sense with any use of force or even psychological manipulation. If they took advantage of anything, it was his eagerness to have sex generally. The more problematic part of this is the undoubtedly unbalanced mindset of the teachers themselves for being so psychologically needy that they need the attention of an adolescent to validate their lives. It seems like many of these attractive female teachers have these frustrated/unfulfilling marriages and extreme need for attention and find the young man's attentions to be some sort of adrenaline rush.

More than their age, I find the fact that they are his teachers to be more troubling. They (supposedly) have the maturity to understand the law and the conflicts of interest caused by sexual relationships with people you are supposed to be supervising/training/instructing. The power dynamic created by that alone is exploitative.

 

Our most fertile years start in our teens, but yet we are not considered adults, that's not right. We are adult enough to start driving cars at 16, vote about whom shapes our next 4-8 years of political & socio-economic life at, when some of us were still in high school for a bit, but we can't have consensual sex with an adult, that's some BS. I always thought that whole situation was backwards.

 

Age is just a number

Like Jaisee mentioned, just because someone turns 18 doesn't mean they're suddenly capable of making decisions

Why not make it some other arbitrary number, like 30 or 40

Until I was able to take the time to read all of these comments, I only saw a comment here or there and thought, good God, what is wrong with these guys??

Even if the kid was 2 years older, if he was still in school, then it's STILL a problem.

The issue is not just statutory rape, which both of these women are guilty of and should be thrown in jail, but they were TEACHERS AT HIS SCHOOL. They have a level of authority over him and are in a position to coerce sex from minors.

How is that not getting through to most of you??

You obviously didn't read the comments because that was said. No one is arguing that authority figures shouldn't have sex with subordinates. The argument being made is about the age and about agency as well as consent. Men and women are different.

Have you seen the movie "Compliance"? It's based on a series of true stories and it makes you think about how assumed and real authority can make you do things you wouldn't have done otherwise.

High school kids cannot give sexual consent to an adult. By definition, the adult has authority over them, whether they want to believe it or not.

And don't give me the 100 years ago argument. That no longer applies.

I did and that was totally different it was an alleged cop giving orders. This kid was bragging about it which is why it got out, people aren't generally gleeful about being victims.
