WWBM Look & Feel: Share Your Thoughts

I'd like to get everyone's thoughts on the overall look and feel of WWBM, including the colors, themes, layout, navigation, and general appearance of the site.

What do you like? What don't you like? Is there anything you'd change or improve?

Feel free to share suggestions, ideas, or examples of things you've seen on other sites that you think would work well here.

The goal is to make WWBM more attractive, modern, and easier to use while keeping the character of the community we've built over the years.

All opinions are welcome. Don't worry about hurting the webmaster's feelings.

With the site theme, I was thinking of creating four and rotating them, along with the photo on the home page, based on the season (fall, winter, spring, summer). Also see if it's possible to recreate the "blue theme" style if folks want a static one, but I'll have to look into how the permissions work and see if it's doable, or pratical.

I would love for us to have an extensive smiley selection like we used to have back in the day. The one with the recent update is better than the previous update's, but I was hoping for more.

Is there a way to have an option to post sound clips? There have been times when certain sound clips would have worked better than any emojis.

I love the modern look and feel of it. The only things I don't like is the generic looking logo and would like to see a logo with animated characters and a different font. I think some animated characters on the site would look better overall. A different color scheme would also look better, maybe a brown and white or Black, brown and white color scheme to go with the theme of the site. I'd also like to see fun games we can play on here to get certain titles in our profiles.

Pre-loaded sound clips similar to adding smilies to a post or audio clips members can embed into a post that works with a play button?

To be clear, you're talking about the logo and font in this image? The image itself can be changed. However, the site name and tagline are not part of the image. They're displayed as actual text on the page, which helps with search engine optimization (SEO). It can be changed to a different font though... any suggestions? We can put it up for a vote.

Animated characters like animated smilies and/or reactions to posts? Or being able to add selectable GIFs to posts, like from https://giphy.com?

Seasonal themes are being looked into but could take a while. I have to look into the current style, which was designed for this site by https://pixelexit.com. And see if I can add more styles (same template with color changes) and select between them using permissions. As well as the "Dark Mode" option.

I'd also like to see fun games we can play on here to get certain titles in our profiles.
I'll see what's available and if there is anything decent. There were games many years ago, but that was on a different platform than we have now. There is also the option of bringing back "Trivia Night," which was hosted in the chat years ago.

To answer your first question , yes. For suggestions, I'd say a cursive font type font, times new roman or same font used on the Keep Calm & Carry On poster. To answer second question, animated characters that look comic book drawn or hyperrealist AI created.

I have some ideas for games that are related to threads on this site, but I don't know anything exists for the ideas I have.

I see you said smileys:

I originally thought you meant more reactions and was going to add more:

Yeah, we used to have a lot of fun smilies to choose from, and sometimes they added just the right touch to a post. I especially miss the black and white hug smiley we used to have. I'll get back to you in a bit with the ones I'd love for us to have again.

More reactions would be nice, too. What other reactions can be added?

I'll add some to both, and then we can go from there. I don't remember what the black and white hug smiley looked like... if you can find an image online, I can copy it.

It would be awesome if we could use the very same emojis that we use in our phones anyhow.

It would be even better if we could bring back the glory days of 2008-11 around here.

The emojis/avatars/emoticons have always been one of the things I most wanted to change. Having the identical ones from our phones will only serve to maximum familiarity with the new layout, by having at least some things that feel familiar to the end user.

It's funny you mention that because when I was looking into the smilies and reactions, I noticed that they can be set to give points (negative, positive, or neutral), and all were set to positive (+1) or neutral (0), even the "thumbs down" was (+1) after the upgrade. Then I remembered the whole "reputation" system that was in place around the time you mentioned, or maybe before that, and all the "fun and drama" that is generated.

I wanted to revisit it to see the setup and compare, but the oldest backup I could find was from 2018.

Edited to add, I found the thread from 2008: https://www.whitewomenblackmen.com/forum/threads/ratings-reputation-and-jail.8695/

I liked the rep system, and I was sad to see it go. I always enjoyed getting and giving positive rep messages, and the best part of negative reps was that it was an effective way to deal with trolls when their points went into the negative and they became restricted. Good times. lol

I also liked the thread ratings—maybe earning various points for the different ratings. Some things we used to have or could do now (points and/or trophies): anniversary points (milestone anniversaries could be worth more points), birthday points, points achieved for post ratings received, number of posts, "The Icebreaker" for creating a thread to introduce yourself in the welcome center, etc. That's all my tired brain can think of at the moment, but I think you get the idea.

I still haven't had any luck finding that particular smiley, but I do recall (I think) that it was Bliss who first posted it back in the day. It got a good response from the members, so you decided to add it. I remember discussion about her sending you the source code or you asking her to, but I don't know if it was via email or what. I'm guessing we're SOL since that was what seems like a hundred years ago.

Was it this?
