The Time is awesome (mostly thanks to Prince). Morris Day is crazy & funny as hell & I love watching him perform. I like his style, attitude & his crazy laugh. Prince has also written music for Shiela E., Carmen Electra, Vanity 6, Chaka Khan, The Bangles, Sinead O'Connor, Mavis Staples, etc.
It is; that's where the etc. came in. There are so many it's hard to think of them all. So many people have no idea how far & deep Prince's influence goes & they don't appreciate his genuis. His music touches me on such a deep level that I can't even explain. I've been hooked on Prince since I was a child, and for me his music is a necessity in my life. I can't understand those who don't care for Prince, because I don't think they know what they're missing.
Purple Rain is definitely some of his best work & it's probably the most popular, but it's only a tiny bit of what makes him great. The best part is below the surface where most people don't even notice.
I haven't heard as much Prince as you, I'm sure, but I know that I can't choose a "best" Prince song, whether if it was an actual Prince song or a song he produced for the Time, Vanity6, etc. I think when you're on the status of Prince, there is no single best song.
