What Justifies Marriage?

Alright the threads around here lately have been producing off the chart readings on my Bullshit-O-Meter, so it's time to tackle a difficult topic with the hope of producing well-fought out truths for ourselves and (maybe) others.

What, if anything, justifies getting married people?

Tell me, is it to provide a stable home environment for children; lifelong companionship; all of the above. Serve it straight, no chaser.

I am hoping that the wiser brothers like Arch, Loki, and orejon chime in on this to balance out some the wiseassedness we're sure to see too.

Hop to it folks, build your arguments for or against marriage.

Marriage in my opinion only serves as tool for family continuity. There's something about a shared family name that makes you feel very close to one another in my opinion. I love being a knight and being part of a big family who shares a lot of my characteristics and values.
Outside of that it really doesn't serve much of a purpose to me. Outside of building a family a man and woman can get the same situation out of wedlock and just cohabitating.

I agree. I've looked at it from several angles and the only thing that justifies marriage for me is the raising of children. Are there other valid reasons? Yes, but I can't sign on to any of them.

Its just a matter of opinion, we all know that. Even if you dont see the value other than for child rearing, just as many do see other values of it.

I never had a strong desire to get married (obviously), I never had that white wedding dream thing going on - but I don't disagree with it either.
I think things fall into place when you see it, if not, that is cool too. I just dont spend time thinking about it.

What I am sick of though, is the fact that many people feel sorry for you for not being married as there is something wrong with you, like you were "unchosen" and had nothing to do with the fact that you are not married. Like, somehow it was not your choice. I have been proposed to 4 times, and I am still unmarried.

    Amen sister,
Been hearing that shit more and more lately and I'm only frickin 30. It really seems like for a lot of married people its not enough to simply be married they want everyone else to join in the "fun" lol

yep, i'll jaisee you both on that one.

i think marriage brings a sense of comfort in the knowledge that you've pledge your love and your life to this one person, that you'll stick together through thick and thin etc., though i don't believe that you need to walk down that isle to do that these days, i understand the comfort it must bring.

Maybe comfort to the person who earns less but for me who usually earns more my biggest fear is falling in love today and then paying for it monetarily for years to come even after its over.
Just found out most standard prenups cover assets attained before marriage anything during marriage is up for grabs. If things go the way I plan(dear sweet baby Jesus please let it work out) I'll be making 200k in 7 to 10 years and it would really suck if I had to give a portion of my check away to someone I no longer wanted in my life.
