In other news, my son is getting lippy (no, not the forum member, lol) and disrespectful and the period of time each visit that I need to deprogram him from his mother's behavior is taking longer. I hope this isn't adolescence...

Ore ~ I have a similar issue w my 16 yr old son. His dad behaves like a total jerk at times and treats others like he is above them. When my son is with his father, he shares that same mentality and I can hear and see those ugly traits in my son. He often talks down to me in such a way that I am his equal or like I'm not making the right decisions when it comes to his little sister. He talks to me in a way that he would never dream of talking to his father. I am constantly deprogramming him and it causes quite a stress on our relationship.

Hard raising a strong willed teenage boy.

Just keep pushing forward and do your best to love your son. Be a strong mentor and try not to allow the frustration with his mom to damage your relationship with your son.

I can't imagine that it has anything to do with properly worded written communication.
