unarmed WM killed by police in Iowa...no one cares

I Haven't had a chance to read through all the recent posts...

But just reading this last one here ...

"Now you bring me some figures to prove how personal gun ownership improves the safety of your fellow Americans, how many people (numbers please) are saved every year by keeping personal firearms.
Where they have prevented injury to the owner of the legal firearm, in real live threat situations, not would have... could have happened."

Bug to your last paragraph and question..it's very difficult to answer that because we have open carry states. As the saying goes, an armed socierty is a polite society. Might be easier to compare Gun ban cities crimes to open carry States crimes..In fact, most mass shooters chose targets that were gun-free.

How do you compare a state to a city? can you imagine comparing PA to philly? The demographics are very much different. not to mention finding a city that is a gun ban city. I've never lived in one. It certainly won't be in the USA.

The saying an armed society is a polite society is violated by several countries. It really is an educated society is a smart society. That's the explanation that I can see for Japan having a low amount of guns compared to say some of the European countries that have open gun policies. It is no secret the USA's education system is crap.
There is also the issue that most Americans don't own guns and are often not victimized.

From what i gather....u are more likely to shoot yourself than having to shoot an intruder

as far as the atmed society polite soceity point......we have a slew of guns in america and we arent very polite..

generally true the other one is you are more likely to shoot a loved one than an actual threat. Most people no matter where you live tend not to be confrontational.:smt012 and if they are you know to avoid them. Fights are predetermined long before they happen in my opinion. What you say and how you say it counts a lot most of the time.

. So true

I have posted this already, but here you go.

In the United Kingdom, access by the general public to firearms is tightly controlled by law, although this is less restrictive in Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world.[1] There were 0.05 recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm per 100,000 inhabitants in the five years to 2011 (15 to 38 people per annum)

Very few other places actually don't allow people to have a gun, even Brazil and Mexico who you quoted earlier allows the general public to have a gun.

But I found South Korea which seems to have very strict rules around firearms.
South Korea[edit]
South Korea has one of the most restrictive gun policies in the developed world. Hunting and sporting licenses are issued, but any firearm used in these circumstances must be stored at a local police station. Violation of firearms law can result in a $(US)18,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

Despite the strict regulations, the vast majority of South Korean males are well trained in the use of firearms, due to the mandatory military service required of all male citizens.[63]

While private firearm ownership in South Korea is exceptionally rare, there have been notable instances of firearm-related mass casualty incidents, most notably the Uiryeong massacre, which was the deadliest lone-gunman massacre until the 2011 Norway attacks. Despite this, gun culture is notably absent in South Korean society outside of the military and police, and gun ownership and deaths rank amongst the lowest in the world.[64][65]

Main article: Gun politics in Australia
Firearm laws in Australia are enforced at a Federal (via customs controls)[citation needed] and State level (all other forms of control). Gun ownership is accessible to the civilian population, and owners must comply with 'genuine reasons' to obtain a Permit to Acquire from their State government. For rifles, genuine reasons focus on either hunting and/or sport/target shooting, and do not include personal protection. Handgun licenses are also available, and applied for separately. In New South Wales, and similarly in other states, firearm ownership is widely prohibited for convicted offenders or those with a history of mental illness. Gun licenses must be renewed either annually or every 5 years, and expire automatically if not renewed.

Firearm control was in place prior to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. However, in its aftermath the major political parties implemented additional and extensive gun-control legislation, this fueled the development of parties such as the New South Wales Shooters Party, which represent deregulation.[citation needed]

In 1996, then Australian Prime Minister, John Howard personally drove through legislation restricting a variety of firearm classes including semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, pump action shotguns holding more than 5 rounds (in some states). Knives, pocket knives and lasers over one milliwatt are classed as weapons in most parts of Australia.[citation needed] The American Journal of Law and Economics reported in 2010 that firearm homicides in Australia dropped 59 percent between 1995 and 2006. In the 18 years before the 1996 laws, there were 13 gun massacres resulting in 102 deaths, according to Harvard researchers.[133]

There are some figures for you.

Now you bring me some figures to prove how personal gun ownership improves the safety of your fellow Americans, how many people (numbers please) are saved every year by keeping personal firearms.

This is a classic type II error where you can't prove a not, its like saying how many break ins are prevented by having a lock on your door.

And my point which is why I brought countries like Jamaica, Brazil, and Mexico into the conversation is because countries like the UK and South Korea don't have a drug war and aren't bordered by third world countries that heavily traffic drugs and weapons. Once again the absolute vast majority gun deaths in the US have next to nothing to do with law abiding citizens purchasing and carrying guns. I seriously don't get why this is so difficult for so many of you to grasp. It's mainly drug turf wars causing this shit and do you think gangs are purchasing glocks and uzis in bulk from their local gun stores with legal IDs?
Come on

You have a very stupid argument.

The number one cause of gun deaths in America is suicide (60+%) so that shits all over your drug war premise. The majority of those suicides are committed by white males.

None of the mass shootings from Columbine to Virginia Tech to Vester Flanagan have anything to do with the drug trade.

So once again you support my argument because then its not a gun problem but a mental health issue. So you're going to say that if not for guns these people would never take their own lives? FOH

I think he was kind of arguing against the premise of the drug war. It is a bit weak since most Americans don't own guns and most U.K. citizens don't own guns yet one is in a drug war and one isn't. One borders say Mexico and one doesn't. That's the B.S. the media feeds us. Reality is that the drug war is nothing more then propaganda to take away rights of the American people, IMO.

It is totally ok to say I own a gun for defense. I think that is why most Americans own guns or take martial arts, etc. but that B.S. that the country wants to sell to attack a large portion of americans who do not use drugs but all of sudden they want to do searches.....:smt012

edit: Yes, there are illegal drugs in the country but it does not justify the amount of emotional distress on law abiding citizens that is caused by the police to catch the drug dealers who are often easily replaceable.

EveryOne is offering useful and enlightening analysis on every aspect of gun use.....but no one is talking about what the hell must be going through millions of Americans minds as they look at photos of Vester and Miles and wonder how many others are going to be driven by the same cause........expect a new intensified wave of negrophia.....

This is coon logic. It doesn't matter to a white supremacist how well or poorly a black person conducts themselves. Shame on you.

The only way to stop mentally disturbed men from acquiring firearms are more stringent background checks.

If this nation as a whole is silent on the issue of gun access, welcome to the new normal and I hope the next innocent who gets killed by random gun violence isn't someone YOU love.

I feel for that cop and the reporter and cameraman who got killed, but in the new normal, that was their own dumb luck.

Right???

R.I.P.

Andre,
The problem is that given the widely publisized brutality of the crimes, nobody is gives a rats ass about the mental health condition, they are focused on what appears to be an increasing pattern and deliberate targeting across racial lines........these crimes stoke fear.....

i have to half way agree with u arch
As soon as the murder of the cop happened ,the chuef of police tried to tie it to black lives matter before they knew the motive. Even after his mental state was revealed he doubled down on what he said.

They just want to play that "blm caused this card."

If pointing out the truth of routine police brutality suddenly makes cops a target, maybe they should start by changing their police tactics, and not become even more aggressive towards unarmed BM and BW.

If BLM is getting blame, the cops in theory are most to blame for what happened.

BLM isn't a hate group, they're an activist civil rights organization.

Pointing out injustice isn't 'hateful'.

This is the same shit conservatives say who believe that talking about racism is the REAL racism.:butthead:

Our law enforcement institutions are seriously in need of nationwide reform.

It's highlighting the reason why so many actual gangbangers describe the cops as basically functioning like their own criminal organization, using the same tactics.

A 24 year old schizophrenic Black man in Virginia was arrested for stealing $5 worth of grocery items, held for 4 months in jail WITHOUT BAIL and was recently found dead in his jail cell.
He allegedly died from starvation after the state didn't transfer him to a mental health ward.

Until the average citizen accepts the idea that the care and welfare of the mentally ill is all of our responsibility, we're going to continue to have blowback.

Reagan closing down state mental hospitals nationwide in the 1980s was the most callous act by an American president in recent history.

They are trying to tie it to blm so to discredit them.. thats the point im trying to make.

So yes i agree with u. Thats why i said i halfway agree with arch.

Must be why all those affluent people down South live in gated communities, because of the right to bear arms.:smt069

Armed robberies, home invasions and car jackings happen down South too, in big cities and small towns, even though they practically give you a firearm with your birth certificate.

Having a firearm may give a homeowner a sense of security and peace of mind, but if you're the victim of a home invasion style robbery it's unlikely you'll be able to get your hands on your weapon in time to defend yourself.

Unless you keep your gun in your bedroom.

And who wants to get in a shootout in their home with their loved ones as potential collateral damage??
Who wants to get into a shootout at all? The thing is I'd much rather have a gun in a shoot out than not, and there are rounds like #4 buckshot that are not as likely to over penetrate as bullets are; if they do or a family member is hit with a stray pellet it's not likely to be lethal. I know someone that was hit in the head with one after it crashed through a window and he suffered no long term injury.

One round of #4, 2 3/4 shot contains 28, 22 caliber pellets, getting hit with one is not likely to be lethal, but the goal is to hit the intruder with all the pellets.

You know that entire 'guns=liberty' meme is not-so-secretly being pushed by the gun lobby??

Those quotes from the 18th and 19th century were relevant for a different time in America and now are just another form of political propaganda.

Pay attention instead to 20th century history.
It's hard as hell to overturn a dictatorship with only guns when your enemy has the full resources of the federal government and the military.

It'd be a lot harder trying to outbox that dictatorship with your bare hands i'd say.

At any rate, you can expect factions of the military to defect should they be ordered to turn on their own citizens.
Amen. With all of the citizens that have guns a few key defectors would even the odds considerably. There may also be defectors who work/worked for contractors that sell technology to the military. Not to mention military veterans. A few pilots that can fly jets and a few people with knowledge of electronics and chemistry can go a long way.

The federal government is undefeated and the reigning champions against secessionist military insurrections.

We can't even organize viable third parties politically in this country to combat the status quo in Congress, yet you believe we can organize millions of citizens to fight the resources of the federal government???

To change the system in a democratic country you need to do it politically.
Firing bullets doesn't work unless you plan to appoint a dictator.

We are talking about the second amendment protecting us in case the government became a dictatorship. No?

Good luck trying to change a dictatorship politically. Its called a dictatorship for a reason. Blood in and blood out.
